Upon finishing ‘Atomised’ by Michel Houellebecq, I turned to Goodreads fully expecting to read hundreds of sparkling reviews. It seems though, that Houellebecq really divided opinion into two distinct camps with this one: the ‘horny, repulsive and tedious’ camp against the ‘seductive, beautifully sad and brilliant’. Plenty of writers of fiction use their work to address questions of politics. Very few writers, however, can spark a heated debate about politics and society with nearly every book that they write. The latter is the case for the controversial French writer Michel Houellebecq.
